كثيرًا ما يخلط الطلاب بين كلمتي "outline" و "summarize" في اللغة الإنجليزية، بالرغم من وجود فرق واضح بينهما. "Outline" تعني رسم مخطط أو هيكل عام لموضوع ما، بينما "summarize" تعني تلخيص الموضوع بأكمله بشكل مختصر. باختصار، "outline" يركز على بنية النص، بينما "summarize" يركز على محتواه الرئيسي.

لنأخذ مثالا: لنفرض أن لدينا مقالا عن التلوث البيئي. "Outline" لهذا المقال قد يتضمن عناوين رئيسية مثل: مقدمة، أسباب التلوث، تأثيراته، الحلول المقترحة، الخاتمة. (An outline of the essay on pollution might include main headings such as: Introduction, Causes of Pollution, Effects of Pollution, Proposed Solutions, Conclusion.) أما "summarize" المقال فيعني كتابة فقرة أو جملتين تلخصان الأفكار الرئيسية للمقال بأكمله، مثل: "يُناقش المقال مشكلة التلوث البيئي، ويشرح أسبابه وتأثيراته السلبية، ويقترح بعض الحلول للحد منها." (A summary of the essay would be a paragraph or two summarizing the main ideas, such as: "The essay discusses the problem of environmental pollution, explains its causes and negative effects, and proposes some solutions to reduce it.")

مثال آخر: لديكِ قصة قصيرة. "Outline" القصة قد يكون سردًا سريعًا للأحداث الرئيسية بترتيبها الزمني. (An outline of a short story might be a quick narration of the main events in chronological order.) أما "summarize" القصة فيعني سرد فكرتها الرئيسية ونتيجتها. (To summarize the story means to state its main idea and outcome.)

هناك فرقٌ جوهريٌّ بين عرض بنيةٍ (outline) وتلخيص محتوى (summarize). "Outline" يشبه رسم خريطة ذهنية، بينما "summarize" يشبه كتابة وصفٍ موجز.
