لاحظوا الفرق: يمكنك القول "a short meeting"، لكنها لن تعبر عن نفس المعنى المُوجز والدقيق الذي تعبر عنه "a brief meeting". فكلمة "brief" تُشير إلى الاختصار في المضمون والمحتوى، بينما "short" تشير فقط إلى القصر في الطول أو المدة.

مثال آخر:

• Short: This skirt is too short. (هذا التنورة قصير جدًا.) This refers to the physical length of the skirt.

• Brief: I had a brief conversation with him. (أجريت محادثة قصيرة معه.) This refers to the short duration and limited content of the conversation.

يُمكن استخدام "short" في وصف أشياء كثيرة، مثل طول الطريق، طول القلم، أو طول العمر. أما "brief" فيُستخدم غالبًا لوصف الوقت، الشرح، أو الزيارة.
