كثيرًا ما نجد أن كلمتي "zilch" و "nothing" في اللغة الإنجليزية تُترجمان إلى "لا شيء" في العربية، لكن هذا لا يعني أنهما متطابقتان تمامًا في المعنى والاستخدام. فكلمة "nothing" أكثر شيوعًا وأوسع استخدامًا، وهي تعني ببساطة عدم وجود شيء. أما "zilch"، فهي كلمة عامية أكثر، تُستخدم للتأكيد على غياب شيء ما بشكل قاطع، غالبًا بطريقة غير رسمية أو مرحة. يمكن القول إنّ "zilch" تعطي إحساسًا أقوى بالعدم من "nothing".

• Zilch: My chances of winning are zilch. (فرصي بالفوز معدومة.) This sentence uses "zilch" to strongly express the impossibility of winning. Notice how it conveys a sense of finality that "nothing" might not.

• Nothing: He told me nothing about the incident. (لم يخبرني بشيء عن الحادث.) A neutral statement about the lack of information received.

• Zilch: She learned zilch from that experience. (لم تتعلم شيئًا من تلك التجربة.) This emphasizes the complete lack of learning, almost implying a wasted opportunity.
