"Argue" සහ "dispute" යන ඉංග්‍රීසි වචන දෙකම ආර්ගුමේන්තුවක් හෝ ආරවුලක් ගැන සඳහන් කරනවා. නමුත් ඒ දෙක අතර වැදගත් වෙනස්කම් තියෙනවා. "Argue" යනු තර්ක කිරීම, තමාගේ මතය තහවුරු කර ගැනීම සඳහා තර්ක ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම යන්නයි. මේක හොඳින් සිදු වුණත් නරකින් සිදු වුණත් විය හැකියි. "Dispute" යනු ආරවුලක්, එකඟ නොවීමක් යන්නයි. මෙහිදී තර්ක කිරීමක් ඇතුළත් විය හැකි වුවත්, එකඟ නොවීම තමයි ප්‍රධාන අංගය.

උදාහරණ වලින් බලමු:

• Argue: They argued about the best way to solve the problem. (ඔවුන් ගැටලුව විසඳීමට හොඳම ක්‍රමය ගැන තර්ක කළා.) This shows a discussion, maybe heated, to find a solution.

• Dispute: They disputed the ownership of the land. (ඔවුන් ඉඩමේ හිමිකාරිත්වය ගැන ආරවුලක් කළා.) This shows disagreement over a fact or claim. There may or may not be an argument involved.

තවත් උදාහරණයක්:

• Argue: She argued passionately for animal rights. (ඇය සතුන්ගේ අයිතිවාසිකම් සඳහා උද්යෝගිමත් ලෙස තර්ක කළා.) Here, arguing is used positively.

• Dispute: The two countries disputed the border between them. (රටවල් දෙක ඔවුන් අතර ඇති මායිම ගැන ආරවුලක් කළා.) Here, dispute is used in a more formal context, relating to a disagreement that might require intervention.
